Cafe Coffee Day
Carter road, Mumbai
The last table in the right corner..
It was here that I had my first date in college! I had managed to muster the courage to ask out a girl I had a crush on. I asked her if she could come out with me for a Coffee. To my luck, she agreed! We met up on a Saturday and headed for Cafe Coffee Day. She seemed happy and it was all good. We were speaking about our family members and other things when I saw a familiar face right behind her. It took me a couple of minutes to realize that it was my father! He had seated himself at the table opposite ours. He was with a few people who looked like they were his colleagues. For a very short moment he looked at me and our eyes met. I couldn’t believe that I was caught! But he looked away as if he had seen nothing! It was obvious as he was with others and could not say anything. I managed to get through the date without expressing the dread and grave concerns I had about going back home and answering dad. Somehow, she had no idea about what transpired in my mind.
That evening, I went home and saw dad reading the newspaper. He saw me, said hello and told me that dinner was ready. It was hard to believe that it was all he said! As the evening progressed, he behaved his usual self and did not ask me a single question. Though I don’t understand why I wasn’t questioned, I’m just happy I didn’t have to answer him that night! A few days later, I realized that mom and dad had a love marriage! May be that’s why he didn’t yell at me for going out on a date. Or maybe he saw himself in me at that moment. Whatever the reason might be, I’m just relieved about what happened. We haven’t spoken out it to this day, he only asks me where I’m going just before I step out and when I say ‘Dad, I’m going to Cafe Coffee Day’, he simply smiles… and I think I know what that means!
